Estimate your score on the Victorian Points Test (VPT), the system Victoria uses to rank applicants for nomination on the Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) visas. The score is out of 950 and updates as you answer.

How the Victorian Points Test works
Victoria receives far more Registrations of Interest than it has nomination places, so it ranks every ROI by its VPT total and invites the highest scores in each invitation round. There is no fixed pass mark, so the score that gets an invitation depends on who else is in the pool at the time. The test favours younger, highly qualified applicants with strong English.
The VPT is separate from the Australian Government's SkillSelect points test, where you need at least 65 points to be eligible for a skilled visa. A strong VPT score helps you rank for Victorian nomination, but you must meet both sets of requirements. Our guides to the Subclass 190, Subclass 491 and Subclass 189 visas explain how state nomination fits into the wider process, and our articles on the differences between the 189 and 190 and maximising your skilled migration points cover the SkillSelect side.

How Victorian invitations work
Anyone in an eligible occupation can submit an ROI, and every ROI is ranked by its VPT total. Invitations are issued in regular rounds, through two routes:
Most competitive: in each round, the ROIs with the highest VPT totals across all eligible occupations in the pool are invited.
Priority industry: certain occupations in Victorian industries are prioritised to address critical skills needs. In each round, the ROIs with the highest VPT totals within each priority industry are invited.
Invitations depend on how competitive the pool is at the time, and the Victorian Government cannot prioritise invitations based on personal circumstances such as age or the expiry of a current visa. See the official Victorian Points Test page for the current priority industries and occupations.
From score to nomination: the process
Check your eligibility. You need to meet the Australian Government's visa requirements, including at least 65 points on the SkillSelect points test, and the Victorian nomination requirements.
Submit your SkillSelect Expression of Interest. Your EOI and your Victorian ROI together supply the information used to calculate your VPT total.
Submit your Victorian ROI. It is ranked against every other ROI in the pool.
Wait for an invitation round. The highest VPT totals are invited, either overall or within a priority industry.
If invited, apply for nomination, then lodge your visa application for the 190 or 491.
Every step has rules and evidence requirements that are easy to get wrong. A MARA registered migration agent can check your eligibility, the accuracy of your score and your timing before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Victorian Points Test (VPT)?+
The Victorian Points Test is how the Victorian Government ranks Registrations of Interest (ROIs) for nomination under the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491). It combines seven weighted factors: age, English language, years of experience in the nominated occupation, educational qualification, occupation skill level, partner skills, and annual earnings from skilled employment in Victoria.
What is the maximum Victorian Points Test score?+
The maximum is 950 points: age 300, English language 200, experience 100, education 100, occupation skill level 50, partner skills 50 and Victorian skilled earnings 150.
Is there a pass mark for the Victorian Points Test?+
No. Unlike the Australian Government’s SkillSelect points test, the VPT has no fixed pass mark. In each invitation round, the ROIs with the highest VPT totals are invited, so your chances depend on how competitive the pool is at the time. An invitation is never guaranteed.
What is a good Victorian Points Test score?+
There is no single answer. Because invitations go to the highest scores in each round, what counts as a competitive score changes with the pool, and the Victorian Government does not publish how your points compare to other applicants or your likelihood of being invited. A migration agent can talk through where your profile sits and what is realistic.
Is the VPT the same as my SkillSelect points?+
No. The Australian Government requires at least 65 points on its own points test to be eligible for a skilled visa. The VPT is a separate score used only to rank ROIs for Victorian nomination. You need to meet both the Australian Government’s visa requirements and the Victorian Government’s nomination requirements.
What is a Registration of Interest (ROI)?+
A Registration of Interest is what you submit to the Victorian Government to be considered for Victorian nomination. Every ROI is ranked by its VPT total, which is calculated from information in your SkillSelect Expression of Interest and your Victorian ROI.
How are Victorian invitations decided?+
Every ROI is ranked by its VPT total. ROIs can be invited through the most competitive route, where the highest totals across all eligible occupations are invited, or through a priority industry route, where the highest totals within each priority industry are invited.
Can I improve my Victorian Points Test score?+
Some factors can change and some cannot. Age cannot be improved. Experience grows with time in your nominated occupation, and English level, education and Victorian skilled earnings may be improvable depending on your situation. The partner points need three conditions to all be met. Not every improvement is practical for every person, so it is worth getting advice before you plan around one.
How accurate is this calculator?+
It uses the points table published on the official Live in Melbourne website for the 2026–27 program, last checked 21 October 2026. It is an estimate only: the Victorian Government can change the table, and your eligibility depends on your full circumstances.
